LAP Band Surgery

The LAP Band is a type of weight loss surgery that alters the actual size of your stomach.  It is dangerous and being targeted to women.  The surgery is portrayed as being simple and having few risks, but this is not the case.  

We are aware of at least three recent death cases that have been filed.  In Neelu Pal v. New York University, a doctor here in New York gave the facts regarding the dangers of the procedure.  It was shown that the level of expertise, preparation, and care has been substandard. Women who do not fit the criteria are still receiving the surgery.

The firm’s founder, Sybil Shainwald, gained national attention for her extraordinary results on behalf of victims of Diethylstilbestrol (DES). Ms. Shainwald pioneered DES litigation as one of the first attorneys to try both DES cancer and non-cancer cases in New York State and was co-counsel in the nation’s first “DES daughter” case, Bichler v. Lilly. Since that time, Ms. Shainwald has represented thousands of women and men, from around the country and worldwide, exposed in utero to DES. Fittingly, she has been given numerous awards for this exceptional work and other accomplishments advocating for the rights of women. 

Not only has Ms. Shainwald been an avid litigator of women’s health issues, but also she has been active in numerous women’s health organizations. She has appeared on every major TV network, written, testified, and lectured extensively on obstetrical malpractice, IUDs, unnecessary hysterectomies, hormone therapy, and products liability litigation. She served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Women’s Health Network for four years, the only national public interest organization devoted to women and health. Ms. Shainwald founded the U.S. affiliate of Health Action International, served as president of the National Women’s Health Alliance, and has contributed to the American Trial Lawyers’ Association (ATLA) and the Hysterectomy Educational Resources Services (HERS) foundation. This exemplary leadership has contributed to the firm’s success.
